L115A3 Sniper Training Solution

The challenge

SNIPER-APP-resize

HQ Army tasked CDS to develop a Sniper Training Blended Learning Solution (BLS) for the Army Sniper School. The requirements of the BLS were to allow students to practice and develop the skills associated with the ranging and adjustment of the service telescopic sight.

Scanning the Landscape

The BLS needed to be able to generate targets randomly at a variety of distances within a set terrain. The student would need to manually scan the landscape to identify each target.

Correctly Calculating the Distance of Targets and Other Familiar Objects

Using the reticule within the scope, the student would need to be able to accurately identify the distance of a target based on real life training conditions.

Analysing a Missed Shot

The BLS would need to provide onscreen feedback of a shot to allow the student to adjust and effectively re-engage the target.

Following strong engagement with a number of SMEs, CDS interpreted the requirement and developed a solution that delivered these features whilst adding additional benefits at every stage.

The Solution

CDS has developed a bespoke BLS, which allows both the student and more importantly the instructor to have sight of the student’s scope image adjustments prior to taking a shot. This is a crucial component as real training has no way of affording the instructor a view to what the student sees through the scope. The CDS Sniper Training BLS provides this ability and has the functionality to be incorporated within a Learning Management System.

Students are able to navigate around a simulated environment, where a number of randomly generated targets appear at different distances. Once the student identifies a target, they must use the skills learned in practical training to make the correct calculations and effectively engage the target.

Complex background algorithms accurately simulate the real time characteristics of the calibre round (i.e. the ballistic co-efficient of the bullet), muzzle velocity, trajectory (fall of shot) and the effect wind takes on the bullet. The student receives feedback of their ‘hit’ or ‘miss’ on a target and is given the chance to readjust and re-engage.

Options

Other optional features include:

  • Encryption to allow for off-site use.
  • Data link to record secure student information including usage and strike rate.
  • Confirmation of training and competency.

Benefits

BLS-based training has many advantages including:

  • Students can be trained for multiple operational scenarios and terrains prior to deployment.
  • 24/7 access to training – no down time due to adverse weather conditions or range day loss.
  • Costs are reduced by negating the need for additional range time, ammunition and coaching/training staff.
  • Cross-platform functionality – the BLS can function on Android, iOS and other similar operating systems.
  • Can be digitally tailored to suit any combination of weapon, ammunition and differing terrains, ranging from urban, arctic, mountainous, desert and jungle etc.

Adaptation

In addition to the Sniper Training, CDS have also developed a Mortar Training BLS. This unique tool presents the student with a geographically accurate virtual map and 3D terrain image (as viewed through General Service Issue Steiner binoculars), a protractor and prismatic compass to allow the student to identify targets and issue fire control data. To provide an ever changing training scenario, the student will need to identify and process the altitude above sea level prior to working out the bearing and engaging the target.
