A British Army Training Development Team (TDT) played a vital role in the UK’s response to the worst ever Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
Military medical experts and learning development specialists joined e-learning contractor CDS to develop a bespoke, comprehensive, structured, modular learning programme within just four weeks. The package elements could be accessed world-wide 24/7 by healthcare professionals, Non-Governmental Organisation personnel and Sierra Leone nationals to ensure standardisation of processes and practice. Successful application of learning theory meant all involved whether illiterate or highly qualified, surgeon or local assistant could operate safely in an unprecedented hazardous biological environment.
The science behind eLearning
Our eLearning solutions are underpinned by sound academic theory and developed collaboratively with our clients and partners. One of our solutions together with our client, the British Army, is shortlisted for the eLearning Awards 2015.
Flipped Learning is a pedagogical approach in which elements of group learning within the classroom space are moved to the individual. Using the instructional stages of Explain, Demonstrate, Imitate and Practice (EDIP) it creates the opportunity, via online media, for the student to view the Explanation and Demonstration phases at their own speed and convenience off site on their preferred device before the lesson commences. Upon arrival in the classroom, armed with their prior knowledge the student can move directly to the Imitating and Practising phases maximising classroom time to gain mastery of the skill as opposed to the traditional approach of sitting passively whilst being read into the subject before practice could commence.
Kolb’s learning cycle
Kolb’s experiential learning theory (1974) is typically represented by a four stage learning cycle and states ‘effective learning only occurs when a learner touches upon all four stages’.
Access to online media and micro training lesson enable ‘having an experience’ to occur before the lesson. ‘Reflection’ would then follow post media exposure but before actual physical classroom attendance. ‘Conceptualise’ occurres during EVDTU classes followed by ‘active experimentation’ at course assessment (with the opportunity to repeat before tests).
